Obtaining PayPal API Credentials

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

In most cases our customers use a free PayPal business account to handle their credit card and other payment transactions online. It’s the fastest to setup, cheapest to use (only pay when you make a sale), and most secure way we know of to get up and running fast with a new web store or e-commerce setup.
For most cases we need to associate your PayPal account to your web app or web store. We do this by associating your PayPal account with a unique PayPal “Signature” that identifies you to the PayPal System, and directs the money into your account.

Below are the simple steps to create a unique PayPal Signature:

Creating an API Signature

First off, please make sure your account is a PayPal Business account. You must have a PayPal business account for this to work.

An API signature is a credential that consists of an API username along with an associated API password and signature, all of which are assigned by PayPal.

To create an API signature

1. Log into PayPal and click Profile.

2. Click API Access from the Profile menu.

3. Click Request API Credentials.

4. Check Request API signature and click Agree and Submit.

5. To complete the process, click Done.

    2. Search Engines

A search engine is simply a website where people type in “key words” about the topic they are searching for in order to get a list of websites and information. The most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, and MSN. A search engine works by sending out what’s called a “spider” program to fetch as many documents (website files) as possible and then index them and serve results to people that are looking for the information. Your goal is to get your website indexed in these search engines. Let’s do that now.

    Google

Ahh Google! This is one guy you’ll want to co-operate with. Google has an approximate market share of over 70%. Yes.. over 70% of the people searching online are using Google to find what they are looking for. For this reason alone, it’s vital you get listed or “indexed” with them. Here’s how you do that:

    ACTION STEPS:

    • Go to www.google.com/addurl
    • Read short introduction information so you can understand how everything works
    • Submit site and you’re done.

There are a number of ways to enhance your rank (position in search results) but are beyond the scope of this article. However, here are a couple more things you can do to get a better rank in the index.

    • Create compelling, valuable content for your customers via a blog, video, or other means and post it on your website. Also make sure it’s web readable. Learn more about making your content “web ready”
    • Follow and study the webmaster guidelines at www.google.com/webmaster

    Yahoo

Yahoo is a great search engine to be indexed in. But it works a little bit differently then google. What you can do is suggest that your site be included. Yahoo will then review and decide.

    ACTION STEPS:

    MSN / Bing

    This is an easy one.

    ACTION STEPS:

    3. Posting your URL Anywhere you can

Another great free way to expose your site is to
post your URL (www.example.com) anywhere you can.

      Here are some suggestions:

    • Social media sites such as (facebook, myspace, twitter)
    • Your email footer or signature
    • If you post on forums, put your link in your signature
    • Business cards, brochures, receipts, checks
    • Anywhere you can think of!

If you’ve done all the action steps in this post, your site will eventually be indexed. This can takes a few days up to a few weeks. Keep rolling out valuable content on your website. If you do this on a consistent basis, traffic won’t be a problem for you.

In future posts we will go over some more advanced concepts of SEO (search engine optimization) and other marketing techniques such as building a list.

How your Visitors Read your Website!

How Your Visitors Read Your Website

Writing content for your website is very different to writing for other mediums. Your visitors will read your website text much differently then they might read a novel or newspaper. Research suggests that about 85% of people will “scan” your website text. Only about 15 percent of people will read your website text word by word. The research done is accurate and is done by using “heat maps” that tracking eye movement as well as other testing measures.

How to Make your Text “Scannable”

In the words of Albert Einstein:

“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler”

Most people don’t have time to read your website text word for word. They need you to provide the key concepts as fast as possible.

To achieve this, follow these guidelines:

    • Avoid slang or jargon. You want to keep your text as free from nomenclature or technical babble as possible. If you need help with this, use a Thesaurus. http://thesaurus.reference.com/
    • Shorter words. Use “Begin” instead of “Initiate”. Use “used to” vs “accustomed to”
Again, a thesaurus can help with this.
    • One Idea per paragraph. Avoid complex sentences and keep your paragraphs down to one idea.
    • Headings that make sense. Avoid “creative” headlines.
    • Bold keywords in a paragraph. This helps with scan-ability.
    • Use Lists (like this one). Slows reader down, makes complex concepts less intimidating.
    • Your article word count should be kept around 500-700 if possible.

    Next

Have a look over your website content now and keep these guidelines in mind.

Remember, the attention span on the web is very low. We want to do everything we can,
to help our visitor reach their goal as fast as possible. Our competitor is often one click away.

Each message that you can broadcast has a limit of 140 characters. There is a history behind this, but we wont get into that now. You would be surprised how much you can say in 140 characters though.

The content of twitter varies. Some of the most common Twitter messages involve:

How to setup a Web Host for your website.

    Thursday, October 8th, 2009

If you’ve never setup a web hosting for a website before, it can be daunting. There are literally hundreds of thousands of webhosts out there all claiming to be the best. But how do you know which webhost is best for you?

In this post, my aim is to help you not only understand what webhosting is, but help you get started with a reliable webhost.

Wait a minute…What is Web Hosting anyway?

Webhosting is simply the service that allows your website files to be transferred to your visitor upon request of your website. Web host computers are on all the time so your website may be accessed by at anytime of day. Take a look at the illustration below:

    HostGator.

Most companies let you pay by the month or by the year. If you are paying by the year you will most likely receive a discount.

Methods of payment are almost always Major Credit Cards & PayPal.

    Features

The features you will need will depend greatly on what you plan on doing with your website. However, the majority of web applications will need:

    • PHP Version 5 (A programming language that runs web applications like WordPress)
    • Database (Either MySQL or MS SQL Server)
    • Email Hosting

Other things that are important are:

    • Bandwidth: the amount of information that can be sent to your visitors each month. Now unless you’re running large website with thousands of visitors and/or many large files such as videos, you should not have to worry about this too much. But a good Host should give you between 10,000 and 30,000 GB (gigabytes) of data per month for about $5-10 dollars/month.
    • Storage: Again, unless you’re running a huge website with thousands of files, video and other content, this should not be a major concern. But as a ballpark figure, between 30-40 Gigabytes of space for $5-10 dollars a month.

    Unix/Linux or Microsoft Server?

Linux (or it’s parent Unix) and Microsoft are two operating systems for hosting your website. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I tend to lean more towards Linux & Unix hosts for a bunch of reasons but the right one for you depends on what you plan on doing with your website.

For simple websites it wont really matter. For more complicated websites such as WordPress Blogs, Content Management Systems, and other more advanced web solutions it may.

If you are in doubt, your web developer or whoever is looking after your website should be able to asses which option is best for you. If not, contact me and I’ll do my best to help you.

    Customer Service & Tech Support

Web Hosting support is one of the things that is sometimes overlooked… Until a problem arises. But customer service, especially tech support, is a major piece of the puzzle when it comes to a good hosting solution.

Recently, I had problems with one of our client’s hosting companies whose name I’ll leave out. It took over 28 hours to get a response. Then we were sent on another 10 hour wait for another setting to be changed (which by the way, should have been enabled anyway). I can’t describe how frustrating this was for me and the client – especially since they were losing potential sales!

If you are concerned with a particular hosts Customer Service, the best thing you can do is “Google it”. Use a term like “ Hosting Company Customer Service Reviews” or something similar.

Now I can’t say enough about our partner company HostGator. There tech support is second to none.  I’m NOT just saying that because we are partnered with them. The speed, quality and friendliness of customer support are second to none. For example, when I click the button “get support” on their homepage, the response is almost instantaneous!

OK Got it! Now How Do I Set It Up ?

The following link will open a new window to a screencast that shows you exactly how to sign up to a webhost for your website. Just click and watch.

    The Launch of Web Simcoe

    Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Yes, we’ve launched it! I’m happy you’ve made it here. There are a few ideas for the site that I’ll talk about. First off if you haven’t yet read about the company and our way of things you can do that on the about page.

Websimcoe is a new kind of web development company dedicated to helping our clients and others achieve more success with their businesses online. My ideas behind this were simple; I was sick and tired of building websites that didn’t yield results for people.  Sure, the sites were great looking, functioned as they were supposed to, but that’s where it stopped.

When this happens, you have a frustrated person who starts to doubt that their website will ever do anything positive for their business.

This is the point that I realized that I must offer more to help people after their initial websites are up and running. I plan to write articles and tutorials on this blog, among news and other postings, that will be focused on helping you, the website owner or owner to be.

    Possible Topics:

    • Search Engine Optimization
    • Content Building focused on Keywords
    • Goal Oriented Design concepts
    • Traffic
    • Email Marketing
    • Keyword Research
    • Sales and more…
    • Please suggest topics in comments below

So In saying that, I plan to help…

    Through goal oriented web design

Goal oriented design is the process of designing a website or web application with a strong focus on user/visitor goals. It’s about keeping things as simple as possible and as focused as possible. Let’s face it, the web is very competitive and very distracting at times. It takes only a few mere seconds for your visitor and potential customer to get distracted and click off your website, or worse click on to a competitors website.

Through this blog – learning and applying..

This blog’s main focus is to help you, the website owner. I will do my best to provide as much information about the subject of webdesign, development and online business to help your website succeed further online. In return you must be willing to apply these techniques to your website.  If you do, I promise you better results.

    Through  Recommendations

Through recommendations of services and processes we will better be able to help you succeed online.  I’m always on the lookout for better services and deals online and I will always be more then willing to write about them here on this blog.

For example, our partner in web hosting is second to none. They are the absolute best at what they do, and it shows. I can’t find anyone locally, or globally that can beat their value. The name of the company is HostGator and you can either go directly to their website www.hostgator.com or check out some of their deals on our web hosting page.

So let that serve as the very first recommendation from Web Simcoe :)

    What’s Next…

I hope you find this blog informational and useful as future posts are made. I’m always open to questions, comments and recommendations for future tutorials and topics in the web development or business field, so feel free to post a comment at the end of this post.

    Until next time,
    Kirk
